He was raised in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland, by his father Joseph when his mother abandoned his family when he was only four years old. When he was 21, he enrolled in acting classes at the Glasow Arts Centre, his inspiration being "the Crucible". In 1991, he helped to found the Raindog theatre company after his favorite Tom Waits album : Rain Dog. The company was dedicated to innovative work.
